Johnny Depp’s past as a great lover has nothing to do with Amber Heard

Johnny Depp has a lot of people in his corner who are willing to sing his praises and give him glowing character references, including his ex-lovers, Vanessa Paradis, and most recently Winona Ryder. But while these two women may have shared magical years with Depp, their comments should have no bearing on his latest legal case against his wife, Amber Heard.

During a recent interview with Time, Ryder shared her thoughts on the abuse allegations Heard made against Depp, explaining that while she can only speak from her own experience, Depp was “never, never that way towards me. Never abusive at all towards me. I only know him as a really good, loving, caring guy who is very, very protective of the people that he loves.”

Ryder also said that the thought of Depp being physically abusive is “unimaginable.”

Depp and Ryder began dating when she was only a teenager back in 1990 and the tabloids could not get enough of their romance. After just five months of dating the pair got engaged, and while they did not make it down the aisle, Ryder clearly only has fond memories of Depp.

“I wasn’t there. I don’t know what happened. I’m not calling anyone a liar. I’m just saying, it’s difficult and upsetting for me to wrap my head around it,” Ryder told the publication. “Look, it was a long time ago, but we were together for four years, and it was a big relationship for me. Imagine if someone you dated when you were — I was 17 when I met him — was accused of that. It’s just shocking. I have never seen him be violent toward a person before.”

Heard’s claims may be a lot for Ryder to wrap her head around, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t true. The problem here is that Depp and Heard’s bitter divorce has played out in the media, and everyone is more than willing to share their thoughts on it. With public opinion weighing against the claims that Heard has made, victim blaming is a possible outcome (something which Heard has already had to deal with).

We ask women to speak up about domestic violence, but when they do, no one believes them. Is this really the message we want to be sending? Therefore, is it not better to keep opinions, like that of Depp’s ex-lovers, private?
