Make sure you pick your jaw up off the floor after the heart-stopping Season 6 finale of Game of Throneslast night. Cersei took us all on an insane trip and when all was said and done, it felt like we had been tossed from a moving train.
There was no way that Cersei was going to stand trial for her “sins”. I think we all knew that. When Tommen announced that a trial by combat was not going to be allowed anymore, fans saw Qyburn whisper to Cersei that he had confirmed a rumor she asked him about. Of course, eagle-eyed fans remembered Bran’s vision and figured that she was asking about the supposed cache of wildfire that Mad King Aerys stashed below Kings Landing. What none of us could have predicted was the sheer amount of casualties that Cersei would cause with her plan.

Queen Margaery, Mace Tyrell, Ser Loras, Kevan Lannister and The High Sparrow were all in the Sept of Baelor when the wildfire went off but Cersei took great care with her plan and made sure that Tommen wasn’t in the explosion. We were treated to a scene of her taking a casual sip of wine, with a smirk on her face as she watched the carnage from the Red Keep. Unfortunately, Tommen was watching it from his own window and once he realized that Margaery had perished, he jumped (or rather, took a step) to his death in one of the most simplistically haunting scenes yet.

Once Cersei realized Tommen was gone, she didn’t shed a tear or make a arrangements to have his body lay in state like she did for Joffrey and Myrcella. No, she told Qyburn to, “burn him” and “bury his ashes where the Sept once stood.” Um…that doesn’t seem super motherly right? Well, her next order of maternal business was to have herself crowned Queen.
As Cersei climbed the steps to the Iron Throne and took her seat, Jamie watched from the balcony. That’s right, he didn’t take his place next to her and he didn’t look like he wanted to. I think the relationship between Cersei and Jamie has shifted as a result of Cersei’s day of shenanigans.

Now remember, last season we saw a flashback where a young Cersei asked a clairvoyant witch, Maggie The Frog, to tell her what her future held. Maggie The Frog gave her a rather unfortunate prophecy that has seemingly started to come true. First, let’s remember that young Cersei was just as terrible, she just didn’t have a cache of wildfire. After telling the witch, “tell me my future or i’ll have your two boring eyes gouged out of your head”, sweet little Cersei was told, “Queen you shall be…until there comes another, younger and more beautiful, to cast you down and take all that you hold dear.” Many assumed this meant Margaery, but now that she went boom, it appears this could mean Daenerys, or possibly Sansa. Next, when precious little Cersei asked about her future children, Maggie told her that she would have three and, “Gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds.” Well, look at that. All three of her children died and they all wore golden shrouds, with Tommen completing this last night in a golden coat.
This is where the fulfilled parts of the prophecy end and the unfulfilled parts begin. The next part of the prophecy said, “And when your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.” So, this sounds like a valonqar is going to strangle Cersei to death at her lowest point, right? So what is a valonqar? It’s high Valyrian for “Little brother”. So, obviously that would mean Tyrion upon first thought, right? Ah, but Jamie is younger than Cersei too, even if it’s only by a couple of minutes. Judging by the look on his face wile he watched her become Queen, I have a feeling that Jamie could be the one to kill Cersei. After all, he already killed one ruler just for threatening to do what Cersei actually just accomplished.

Lena Headey herself actually weighed in on the prophecy and whether she sees Cersei going out by the hands of her beloved Jamie, in an interview with Us Weekly. According to Headey, she hopes Tyrion or Arya take her down, saying, “I’ve always said that when it happens, as long as it’s kind of glorious and gory and it’s by the right person…”
