We’ve all heard this one before: Kim Kardashian is only famous because Paris Hilton made her so.

Sure, Kardashian spent her younger years working as Hilton’s closet organizer, and Hilton was a reality TV star and budding socialite who allowed young Kardashian to tag along on red carpet appearances now and then. And sure, it was soon after working for Hilton that Kardashian’s infamous sex tape with Ray J was released and she landed her own reality TV series, Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
The idea that Hilton is responsible for Kardashian’s success has once again resurfaced, thanks to a Hilton superfan who posted an image to Instagram showing a shot from Kanye West’s new video for his song “Famous,” with Hilton’s face pasted over Taylor Swift’s face. Swift is shown lying next to West in bed in the video, an obvious reference to West’s attempt to take credit for Swift’s career success.

Across the top of the image, a line reads, “I made his bitch ‘famous,'” and the caption of the photo also digs at West and Kardashian, reading, “Kanye before judging artists and celebrities, you should check out your home first…#parishilton.”

Hilton obviously agrees on some level that she’s responsible for Kardashian’s success — she liked the image on Instagram, a move that was definitely pretty shady.
But let’s actually think about this one. Can Paris Hilton really still be trying to take credit for Kardashian’s career? Kardashian’s first moments in the limelight were by Hilton’s side, sure, but in the last decade, she’s built an entertainment empire branded by her name. Her TV show, apps, books and other marketing can’t all be traced back to Hilton, and it’s time for Hilton to face that.
