Look, I get it — Gwyneth Paltrow has had some major foot-in-mouth moments, but when I heard that she was considered the most hated celebrity in Hollywood according to a 2013 Star Magazine rating, I thought maybe I needed to get my ears checked.

Turns out, Paltrow was pretty shocked by the ranking as well, and took to BBC News’ Hardtalk on Wednesday to air her grievances over her most-hated status.
“First of all, I was like, ‘I’m the most hated celebrity? More than, like, Chris Brown?’ What did I do?” Paltrow said to host Stephen Sackur during an interview at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
According to Us Weekly, Brown ranked at No. 20 on the list. Other celebrities included were Kristen Stewart at No. 2, Madonna at No. 7, Anne Hathaway at No. 9 and Lindsay Lohan at No. 16.
I think Paltrow hit the nail on the head with her remark about Brown. Considering that there are celebrities who have been associated with major crimes like Brown for his assault against Rihanna, Bill Cosby for his sexual assault against dozens of women, Teresa Giudice for her fraud charges and Mark Sailing for his child pornography charges, suddenly Paltrow doesn’t look so bad.
Yet she’s the most hated? Why? Because she’s a wealthy woman? Because she talks about her situation in the world without understanding or considering what anyone else is going through? That definitely doesn’t put her on many popularity lists, but it seems to me that there are worse things and worse people.

And why do we forgive some celebrities for saying dumb things, but not others, like Paltrow? Ariana Grande, after all, went on a rant against America and yet people moved on. Donald Trump is in the running to be our next president despite the fact that he has gone on multiple racist rants. And Clueless actress Stacey Dash has practically made herself a career out of being, well, politically clueless.
But when Paltrow says she’d rather smoke crack than eat spray cheese, the world freaks out. That’s what gets the world heated? Spray cheese?
“All I can do is be my authentic self, and if you know me, then you know who I am, and that I have fun and eat and am so appreciative for my life,” Paltrow said during the interview with Sackur. “But I think there are things about me that make people draw conclusions.”
Despite coming from a wealthy family, she insists that she has worked hard to get to where she is today.

“My parents [director Bruce Paltrow and actress Blythe Danner] did well, and I was able to go to a fantastic school, and we grew up in New York City, but the minute I left my college to try to pursue acting, my father was really supportive. But he said, you know, ‘You are completely on your own.’ So, he never gave me anything. I never had any supplementation, he never helped me with my rent, I never had a trust fund. So the idea that I am spoiled or that I didn’t work for what I have is just not accurate, but I can see how somebody might have that perception.”
