Amy Schumer is an American treasure for continuing to spread body positivity

If there are two things Amy Schumer is known for, they’re quality comedy and breaking the rules of Hollywood. Whether it’s the way she talks about relationships and sex or the way she shows off her body, Schumer is always pushing back on what other people tell her she should be doing.

So why wouldn’t she continue that trend on America’s favorite holiday?

To celebrate the Fourth of July, Schumer tweeted a picture of herself in a bikini in front of two American flags. She captioned the beach shot “An American treasure,” which is pretty much dead-on.

Schumer is both a beautiful and talented comedian, and while she may not fit into the standard size 00 of most Hollywood actresses, she doesn’t seem to care. She posts as many bikini-clad selfies as any Victoria’s Secret model and she’s constantly encouraging people who may have insecurities about their bodies to do the same

In a 2015 interview, she explained that she’s dealing with insecurities all the time, but it can’t stop her from doing what she wants to do. She said, “For women, we’re taught to eat less until we disappear. And trained to believe that if you don’t look like everyone else, then you’re unlovable. And men are not trained that way. Men can look like whatever and still date a supermodel.”

She continued by saying, “I think it’s good to see somebody saying: I have a belly. And I have cellulite. And I still deserve love. And to catch the old D. And to not apologize.”

Leave it to her to turn a potentially touchy subject into a hilarious line about “the old D.”

Regardless of what you might think of her comedy, Schumer is definitely someone to aspire to be like. In a world where people are constantly showing a perfectly curated version of themselves, she’s trying to be authentic and honest about herself and her body. I definitely think that counts as an American treasure.
