Top Gear is about to go through some growing pains. Chris Evans has announced that after five episodes of the show, he won’t be continuing on as cohost. According to Us Weekly, tensions with fellow co-host Matt LeBlanc may be behind his decision — if it was a decision — to depart.

Evans tweeted the announcement himself on Monday: “Stepping down from Top Gear. Gave it my best shot but sometimes that’s not enough. The team are beyond brilliant, I wish them all the best.”

The BBC confirmed the news and attempted to quell rumors in its own statement: “Chris is stepping down from his duties on Top Gear. He says he gave it his best shot, doing everything he could to make the show a success. He firmly believes that the right people remain, on both the production team and presenting team, to take the show forward and make it the hit we want it to be.” The statement makes it clear that the BBC isn’t interested in anyone attacking LeBlanc or the production team for Evans’ departure.
LeBlanc will continue on solo for now, although there’s no word as to whether he’ll get a new co-host to join him.
