Spice Girls’ ‘Wannabe’ just got a reboot that really could change the world

If there’s one thing that the Spice Girls proved during their reign as the biggest girl group, it’s that the message of Girl Power is timeless. The Spice Girls were empowering girls to demand respect in their relationships, their career and everywhere else before there were blog posts to share. Now, 20 years after “Wannabe” was first released, it’s gotten a reboot that could change the world again.

The charity Project Everyone has remade the song’s video with a slight twist. Instead of telling potential lovers what women really, really want, the Project Everyone video tells government officials what we really, really want — quality education for all girls around the world and an end to violence against women.

The video gives a nod to the original with the famous staircase setup and some sweet choreography, but it also sends powerful messages about equality for women that, honestly, make it even better than the original. The cast also has women from all over the world, bringing the Girl Power message to everyone.

Even Victoria Beckham has endorsed this new version. She said, “I think this film is a wonderful idea. How fabulous it is that after 20 years, the legacy of the Spice Girls’ ‘Girl Power’ is being used to encourage and empower a whole new generation.”

It’s inspiring to see the creative and innovative ways charities are helping spread the message and bringing equal voice to just about everybody on the planet. Sure, there’s still a long way to go, but the more people keep making this kind of education fun, catchy and informative, the easier it will be to spread the message and enact some real change.

The other four members of the Spice Girls haven’t commented yet, but I’m thinking that if this video gets enough views, Project Everyone can convince them to be in the second single video. “Say You’ll Be There,” anyone?
