Kaley Cuoco is an avid Instagrammer and a huge lover of animals, so it seemed only fitting that she would post a photo to Instagram featuring her dog and the American flag during her Fourth of July celebration. The thing she learned she shouldn’t do, however, is take a picture where her dog is sitting on the American flag.

The photo, which has since been deleted, caused a huge uproar from her followers who saw the post as disrespectful to the country and the flag. Today, Cuoco posted to her Instagram with an official apology for offending everyone.
In the new image, she wrote, “I would like to comment on a photo I posted yesterday, that has caused lots of controversy. First off, please know, I have the utmost respect for my country. I am a proud American in every sense of the word. I understand the American flag stands for our freedom and represents American heroes, past and present.”
She went on to say that her picture was a mistake, but that it in no way reflects the way that she feels about the country.

Then her apology took an interesting turn, one that celebrity apologies rarely take. She stood up for herself and shifted some of the responsibility back onto her followers. Cuoco wrote, “Living in the public eye, can be extremely difficult at times. Every mistake and every imperfection is amplified. I am not perfect. I am a proud American, today, tomorrow, always.”
In this way, I think Cuoco is completely right. Many of the people who follow celebrities on social media sites know that if they cause enough of an uproar, they can force that celebrity to apologize for their behavior, or at least deal with a day’s worth of bad publicity. And a lot of the time, the reason they’re upset isn’t totally justified.

As much as Cuoco should take responsibility for not having the American flag hung instead of on the ground with her dog, her followers, and anyone who is constantly angry online, need to take responsibility for being upset over every minor detail.
