Everyone’s offended by Mischa Barton’s already-deleted post about police brutality

The past few days of unjust killings have left many people scrambling to find a way to take action and express frustration. Celebrities aren’t immune to feeling that pain. Dancing with the Stars and The OC alum Mischa Barton is one of them. But unlike the celebs who throw up an Instagram quote and either move on with their day or do something behind the scenes to help, Barton went in the opposite direction.

In an act that I can only assume had the best of intentions, Barton posted a photo to Instagram with a very earnest caption about the Alton Sterling shooting. She paired it with a photo of herself on a yacht, drinking rosé and looking pensive. To say that the photo speaks of privilege — white, class, celebrity — is an understatement. It has since been removed.

Here’s the caption in full: “I’m truly heart broken to watch videos like the #altonsterling execution. This may have been going on forever in the United States but thank god the pigs get caught on camera now. Its unthinkable and an embarrassment to America. The country I was brought up in. Somebody make change. We need gun control and unity. And a real President so think about that when this election is around the corner. The world is a precarious place right now.#stop#reflect and #act appropriately.”

Sometimes the best intentions aren’t enough, and we need to be held accountable for educating ourselves before we speak — or post a photo.
