Beyoncé pays powerful tribute at her concert to victims of police brutality

In the wake of the tragic and unjust deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, Americans everywhere are feeling deep sadness as well as intense anger and frustration. It’s impossible to know what to do with those feelings or how to change things, but Beyoncé is calling for action.

Today, she posted a short but powerful letter to her website calling on everyone to turn their “anger and frustration into action.” In the letter, which she titled “Freedom” after her single with Kendrick Lamar, she writes, “We’re going to stand up as a community and fight against anyone who believes that murder or any violent action by those who are sworn to protect us should consistently go unpunished.”

She continued with, “This is a human fight. No matter your race, gender or sexual orientation. This is a fight for anyone who feels marginalized, who is struggling for freedom and human rights.”

Beyoncé also points out that she’s not anti-police, but she is anti anyone who doesn’t value the lives of fellow humans.

Her passionate letter ends with a call to action for anyone who reads it. She wrote, “While we pray for the families of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, we will also pray for an end to this plague of injustice in our communities. Click in to contact the politicians and legislators in your area. Your voice will be heard.”

But she didn’t stop with just a letter. She also took an opportunity to pay tribute to Alton Sterling, Philando Castile and the countless other victims who have lost their lives to police who have forsaken their oath to protect with a moment of silence.

Beyoncé has not been known to speak out about political issues, but with the frequency of these types of murders, she has obviously had enough, like the rest of us. By performing her song “Freedom” and these letters and speeches, she’s ready to make a change.

I think it’s time we all fall into formation with her.
