After putting her own life on hold to help nurse him back to health, Khloé Kardashian filed for divorce from Lamar Odom for a second time in May. Her reasons are certainly understandable — she and Odom were having marital problems long before he was found unconscious at a Nevada brothel last year after overdosing on cocaine and a Viagra-like supplement. But Odom’s recent response to the divorce filing proves that the former basketball star is not living in reality.
Odom reiterated in a Los Angeles courtroom that “irreconcilable differences” are the reason for his split with Kardashian. But he then requested that the court deny Kardashian any spousal support and that she be forced to pay all attorney fees and costs. It’s as if he truly believes that she is entirely to blame for their divorce and that his behavior had nothing to do with her reasons for ultimately giving up on their marriage.

I’m sure Kardashian doesn’t need Odom’s money, but that isn’t the point here. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star dropped everything to be by his side in October 2015 and even called off their divorce because she put his recovery ahead of her need for closure. Thanks in part to her love and loyalty, Odom was able to get back on his feet and make a full recovery after many predicted he wouldn’t pull through. She put her needs last to help her husband, long after it seemed like their relationship was over.
No one was sure whether this meant Kardashian and Odom would truly try to make another go at their marriage. But who could blame Kardashian for putting the brakes on second chances after Odom was spotted reportedly drinking alcohol around Easter and again in early May? There’s only so much a person can take and only so much they can do to help someone who doesn’t seem to be helping himself.

I’m no expert, but it sure seems like someone who nearly overdosed a year ago should probably swear off all forms of drugs and alcohol with no exceptions. I can’t blame Kardashian for wanting to rid herself of all traces of this marriage, including dropping “Odom” from her name. Can you imagine how painful it is for her to constantly hold out hope that this person she loves is going to change, only to find that he keeps putting himself in positions where he compromises his health? At some point, she has to give up — for the sake of her own sanity and health.
Odom should seriously be thanking his lucky stars for Kardashian. Maybe he’s pissed off at her right now. Perhaps he really thought they could work things out. But he has to face reality and work on his own problems now — and one of the ways he can prove he appreciates everything Kardashian has done for him and show her the respect she deserves is to find his own way to pay for his attorney fees instead of insisting that she foot the bill.
