The Spice Girls change their name and hint at possible reunion tour

The Spice Girls are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their huge breakout single “Wannabe” by changing the band’s name (sort of) and that implying a reunion tour is headed our way (again, sort of). One thing is certain: At least three of the original band members are totally into the idea of giving us what we really, really want. But is three out of five enough to make it happen?

You may have already guessed it, but the three willing participants are Mel B. (aka Scary Spice), Emma B. (Baby Spice) and Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice). The trio have renamed their group GEM (for Geri, Emma and Mel), though I’m guessing that’s nothing more than a bit of a joke at the expense of Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) and Mel C. (Sporty Spice), who are noticeably absent from this sweet video the ladies recently released to thank their fans:

So, that mention of a big “party” at the end of the video can only mean one thing, right? A reunion tour? Might they reunite as a threesome and tour the world without Beckham and Mel C.? The ladies, again, proved they are thick as thieves with this photo:

They’re obviously spending a great deal of time together and maybe even working on new music (never say never).

As for the missing members of their squad: Judging by Sporty’s Instagram, it seems like she is keeping busy performing music, running her record label, Red Girl Records, hanging with fellow ’90s stars like Natalie Imbruglia and raising her daughter, Scarlet. On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d rank the possibility of her dropping everything to tour with the girls at about an 8. She seems to love performing too much to turn down the opportunity to reunite with her girls.

But, ugh, Victoria. She really is the missing link. Can Beckham be blamed for heading an insanely successful fashion label that shows twice a year at New York Fashion Week? Should we curse her for enjoying a strong relationship with husband David Beckham, with whom she is raising four children, the youngest of whom is just 4? Of course not. She has enjoyed a prolific career and a great deal of fortune, and we’re thrilled for her. If she can actually find any time in her schedule at all to rehearse and tour with the Spice Girls, bless her heart — but on that same scale of 1 to 10, I’m feeling our chances of seeing Posh are a not-so-great 2.5.

Still, stranger things have happened, and you never know what the Spice Girls are going to do. Guess we’ll just have to keep replaying “Wannabe” at top volume and wait to see what they have up their sleeves this time.
