The Real Housewives of Atlanta‘s Cynthia Bailey has made some big changes to her personal life recently, including getting a divorce from her estranged husband, Peter Thomas. But while their marriage was far from perfect, shockingly, Thomas did not realize that Bailey was ready to throw in the towel.

Thomas revealed as much in a statement made to Uptown magazine. He said, “We have discussed divorce. It wasn’t something that I wanted. But it is something that I believe she thinks she needs. And honestly, I wish we could have made the public announcement jointly.”
A break-up is never easy, and when you’ve been with someone for a lengthy amount of time (in this case it’s six years) it’s even harder, and it’s clear that Thomas is really feeling the effects of Bailey’s decision to leave him — she told E! News that she had given the relationship all she could and needed to focus on herself right now.
“I love Cynthia. I have never cheated on her. She knows this. I have never taken any money from Cynthia. She knows this. I have never done anything, but love and defend my wife. She knows this too,” Thomas continued.

But is The Real Housewives franchise to blame? Did the reality TV curse catch up with this couple and put a magnifying glass over their issues? Thomas seems to feel that the answer to these questions is a resounding “yes,” although he notes it isn’t the only factor.
“While the show is not the single contributing factor to the turmoil in our relationship, RHOA had a lot to do with it. Reality TV can be a blessing and a curse, as it provides tremendous opportunities, but it also puts one hell of a strain on a relationship, especially if the foundation is not solid,” he stated. “Our individual ambitions were also part of our relationship’s demise.”
However, Bailey feels differently, telling E! News that regardless of the hit Bravo series things would have eventually ended because “our issues would have happened anyways because it’s just personalities and it’s just chemistry and it’s also compatibility.”
She does have hopes for her future with Thomas though, although it’s in a very different capacity.

“I am really optimistic that in the end, after we take some time, we are going to be friends at the end of this because that was the start,” she told the publication.
