With the 2016 Presidential election on its way, politics seems to be on the minds of most public figures looking to make a difference. However, it seems as if maybe not everyone is quite as involved. Because, when it comes to the “All About That Bass” singer, Meghan Trainor is making her lack of interest in politics clear. There was absolutely no holding back when she shared with Billboard magazine just what she’s not doing this election season.
“I should be way more aware [of politics], and if it was [Clinton] or Trump, I’d definitely vote for her,” spilled Trainor. “But I’ve never voted and I don’t have any desire to.” Yep, even if Meghan Trainor does have an opinion on which candidate may be best, she isn’t going to do further research or even go out to a polling location and vote. And this is exactly the kind of comment a celebrity as famous as Meghan should probably shy away from saying at this stage in the political game. Why? Because while, yes, everyone is allowed to have their own opinion, whatever Meghan says publicly has a reach toward thousands of young fans who look up to her.

In fact, the singer not only points out just how much her fans want to be like her in her new song “Me Too,” but she also has more than two million followers on Twitter and almost six million followers on Instagram. And, well, that’s a lot of young minds who might be hearing that opting out of interest in politics and taking part in elections is the cooler thing to do.
Meanwhile, her comments on ignoring the polling stations is just the beginning of what makes it so shocking. Because, otherwise, Meghan is not a celebrity known to sit idly by amidst all of the chaos going on around the world. Recently, Meghan took part in the song “Hands” in support of the LGBTQ community following the Orlando shootings and she’s even expressed her political viewpoints on certain topics by saying, “I think it’s ridiculous that random crazy people can buy guns.” So, is her statement contradictory? Yes. And that just makes this all the more confusing.

However, considering some of the other comments Meghan made in the interview, perhaps she doesn’t realize the effect and influence her words can have on the young people who follow her. “I still don’t feel famous,” she shared with Billboard. “I’m nowhere near as famous as [Justin Bieber].” But, as with all public figures, how wrong she can be.

Now we’ll just have to wait and see if Meghan takes any other action toward making a difference. And, hopefully, those words will speak louder than these.
