Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin have made their uncoupling official. The pair reached a divorce settlement recently, two years after announcing their separation. When they announced that they were going to make a “conscious uncoupling,” we all mocked them for such a weird way to say divorce — but maybe we shouldn’t have, because everything is still amicable between the two.

In the settlement, Paltrow and Martin have a written agreement regarding their property and child support. They also mutually agreed that neither would ever ask the other for spousal support. All in all, it remained a very civil and mature divorce settlement, which is very much in line with their conscious uncoupling statement from two years ago.
In the 2014 announcement, they assured everyone that they would remain close, stating, “We have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much, we will remain separate. We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been.”

It wasn’t just talk, either. Paltrow and Martin frequently spend time together as co-parents. Most recently, Paltrow hung out backstage with their daughter, Apple, to support Martin and his group Coldplay.

Whether or not you like the strange language they use to talk about their separation, their dedication to remaining close and keeping their family together is admirable. When so many celebrity divorces can drag on for years with a lot of dirty laundry aired, Paltrow and Martin found a way to remain loving toward one another.

They were one of the first couples to put their children first. They paved the way for Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck and many couples like them by setting the standard for mutual respect and a devotion to doing what’s best for the kids.
For that, I applaud Paltrow and Martin and wish them good luck as they continue to raise their children.
