As soon as word broke earlier this week that Making a Murderer would be getting a second season, one of the first questions that popped into our minds was whether or not Season 2 would shed any light on what is going on with Steven Avery’s nephew, Brendan Dassey.
As you probably remember, Dassey is Avery’s young nephew who was pretty much bullied into giving what appears to be a false confession of his guilt in the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach and is currently serving a life sentence.
Even if you didn’t come out in Avery’s corner after watching Making a Murderer, you have to admit that Dassey’s part of the story is beyond heartbreaking.

We’ve known for a while that Avery has high-profile lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, working hard to prove his innocence, but we haven’t heard much in the way of Dassey’s fight to overturn his murder conviction. But now we’re learning that Making a Murderer Season 2 will highlight Brendan Dassey’s hope for a new trial.
Laura H. Nirider, Dassey’s current lawyer, says Dassey is still hopeful that he’ll be granted a second chance to have his case heard.
“The whole world saw what happened to him over the course of Season 1,” Nirider said in a statement to People magazine. “People are rightfully up in arms about what happened to him, and we are grateful a spotlight will continue to be shown on his case.
“I think everybody’s been taken aback by how popular the series was, and we are incredibly grateful for the focus it has put on this case,” Nirider added.
As Netflix announced earlier this week, Season 2 of Making a Murderer will continue to follow the story of Avery, who was previously falsely imprisoned for rape, but was proven innocent and released in 2003 after serving 18 years. He filed $36 million in damages against Manitowoc County, its sheriff and its district attorney after his release, but was arrested in 2005 for the murder of Halbach while his civil suit was still pending.

“The new installments will take fans of the acclaimed documentary series back inside the story of convicted murderer Steven Avery, and his co-defendant, Brendan Dassey, as their respective investigative and legal teams challenge their convictions and the State fights to have the convictions and life sentences upheld,” according to Netflix.
