Apparently, even being a celebrity won’t save you from being shamed if you breastfeed in public. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, actress Mila Kunis spoke about her experience with feeding her daughter, Wyatt, who’s 21 months old, in public. Kunis admitted that she and Kutcher were surprised at the negative response she got from publicly feeding Wyatt: “People actually looked at us in a shameful way, and we were like, “Oh my God,’ because it’s so not a sexual act.”

Kunis is hardly the first celebrity to face criticism for breastfeed in public; in 2012, singer Pink was derided for feeding her 15 month old daughter, Willow, in a restaurant. While Pink was nursing under a cover, it didn’t stop the (male) customer from having an opinion about what she was doing.
“There were so many times where I didn’t bring a cover with me,” said Kunis, 32, who’s expecting her second child with Kutcher. “So I just did it in a restaurant, in the subway, in the park, in airports, and in planes. Why did I do it in public? Because I had to feed my child. She’s hungry.”

Kunis’ frustration is totally understandable, of course, and it’s great to have a celebrity speaking out about what women confront everyday when when they publicly breastfeed, cover or not. “I think it’s unfortunate that people are so hard on women who choose to do it, and do it in public,” she said. She continued, hitting on what’s behind the discomfort for many who criticize women for breastfeeding. “We sexualize the breast so much that there’s an aspect of it that people just don’t know how to wrap their head around the idea of showing your breast in public.”
It’s important to note that women who choose not to breastfeed their kids aren’t exempt from scrutiny; in fact, they’re subjected to a whole different sort of scrutiny. Either way, you do what’s best for yourself and your baby, ladies, and know that Mila Kunis is on your side
