Shailene Woodley, who plays Tris in the fantasy series, told reporters at the San Diego Comic Con that she wasn’t given a heads-up before news broke yesterday that Ascendant would be skipping the big screen to head straight to TV and inspire a spinoff series.
“Honestly, I was on a plane when all that happened, and I landed, and I’m like, ‘Whoa, what’s going on?'” Woodley said, adding that she doesn’t know yet whether she’ll be returning to reprise her role in the series. “I need to talk and find out what the details are.”

Ascendant was set to begin filming this summer and slated to be released in June 2017. Reportedly, Lionsgate, the studio that has produced the three other films in the series, began considering a straight-to-TV release after the third film, Allegiant, performed poorly at the box office compared to the first two. Reports say some fans of the book trilogy, on which the movies are based, were upset that the third book was separated into two movies.
Few other details have been released, including whether the movie series’ stars, like Woodley, will continue their roles in the TV film or the spinoff series. Page Six reported earlier this week that the series has not yet been greenlighted or optioned by a network.
