Kristen Stewart isn’t known for opening up about her personal life. Despite millions of people who have been prying into her love life since Twilight, she’s managed to stay tight-lipped about her relationships.
Until now.
Stewart is beyond blissful in her relationship with her girlfriend, Alicia Cargile. So happy that she is willing and excited to publicly talk about her. She told Elle magazine, “Right now I’m just really in love with my girlfriend. We’ve broken up a couple of times and gotten back together, and this time I was like, ‘Finally, I can feel again.'”

What’s really incredible about Stewart’s openness is not only that she’s in a relationship that she feels secure enough in to talk about, but that she feels secure enough in her fans and the general public that she can talk about her girlfriend. It wasn’t that long ago that same-sex couples had to stay shamed into the closet.
It didn’t take long into the relationship for Stewart to understand the difference now that she’s dating a woman. She said, “When I was dating a guy, I was hiding everything that I did because everything personal felt like it was immediately trivialized, so I didn’t like it. We were turned into these characters and placed into this ridiculous comic book, and I was like, ‘That’s mine. You’re making my relationship something that it’s not.’”

But things are so much different for Stewart now, and she wants to be open and honest about her relationship. She said, “It changed when I started dating a girl. I was like, ‘Actually, to hide this provides the implication that I’m not down with it or I’m ashamed of it.’ So I had to alter how I approached being in public. It opened my life up, and I’m so much happier.”
Stewart doesn’t need to be open about her relationship, really. People would have assumed that she wasn’t talking about her girlfriend because she dislikes the attention. But instead of taking the easy way, Stewart took the more open — and now, more celebrated — way of being honest about her love.
