The long-awaited return of Sonny Kiriakis (Freddie Smith) to Days of Our Lives has finally occurred, but it raises a lot of questions for the fans. The first order of business involves Sonny’s love life: Will he reunite with his first love, Paul Narita (Christopher Sean)?

DOOL has been suffering from a lack of juicy story lines, and with Smith back in the NBC fold, it’s the perfect time to revive his character’s gay storyline. The narrative also fits in well with the political climate going on in a U.S. election year. With marriage equality now legal, it might be interesting to see how a more mature Sonny can handle his romance with Paul.
The soap whet the fans’ appetite with a quick run-in on the July 28 episode between Paul and Sonny. It only led viewers to beg for more of “Ponny” on social media, after getting a 14-second moment together.

It doesn’t look like it’s going to be an easy road to romance for these two though. Smith told Out magazine recently that the reason Sonny is back in Salem is to deal with family issues. He’s also still dealing with the loss of former husband, Will, who was a victim of last year’s Necktie Killer story line.

“After losing the part of him that he loved the most, I think that definitely leaves a dark spot in his heart, and he’s going to be coping with that and dealing with that,” said Smith to Out magazine about the death of Will.
With all of Sonny’s drama and darkness, is there any room for him to rekindle a romance with Paul? Smith seems to think so.

“[Sonny and Paul are] great friends and you always have a piece of your heart with your first love,” he explained. “I definitely think there’s always going to be chemistry and a blossoming friendship. Who knows? Who knows what will happen?”
How long will DOOL make fans wait for this to happen? Or will they introduce a new character to make Sonny and Paul’s road to happiness a bumpy one?
Let’s hope we don’t wait too long. Sonny needs some loving in his life now.
