The Hills anniversary special is coming next week, and to prepare for it, everyone is reliving the iconic “reality” show’s best moments. Obviously, that means we’re celebrating Lauren Conrad and her single black tear. The tear that’s more famous than the show at this point. Finally, we get to hear the behind-the-scenes explanation of what was happening in that moment.
In an interview with MTV, Conrad was asked how she got such a dramatic effect. She said, “I don’t think it was the mascara — I think it was the eyeliner that was running. I still wear the same mascara, and it doesn’t run like that.”

To be fair, though, Conrad also admitted, “I rarely cry these days.”
I’m going to choose to believe it’s because she doesn’t have friends that mean as much to her as the ones she had on The Hills. I’m allowed to because The Hills never worked unless you believe in a fake reality.
In 2013, Conrad revealed an even bigger secret about the tear to Cosmopolitan. She admitted that the producers tweaked it a little bit in post. She said, “You know that they slowed it down in the show right? Yeah, I asked my producer and he told me they put it in slow motion to give it a more dramatic effect. That day it was filmed I was really sad — and I wasn’t wearing waterproof mascara. Whoops.”

Honestly, the fact that it was altered in post doesn’t matter one bit. Every fight that went down during The Hills’ run was dramatic and bordered on absolutely ridiculous, so the producers having fun with the footage they were editing makes it all the more absurd and amazing.
None of the silliness or inauthenticity of the moment takes away from my love for the GIF and for the show. If the anniversary special is going to continue to spill hilarious secrets like this, I’m all in.
