Aubrey O’Day isn’t known for keeping her opinions to herself. If she thinks something, you’re definitely going to know it immediately. Normally, that’s not a bad thing. But her opinion that Hitler was a brilliant man probably didn’t need to be shared.

A video has resurfaced of O’Day telling Fox News that although she doesn’t condone what Hitler did “one ounce,” he is a brilliant man. But she didn’t stop there. She said, “I think many murderers are brilliant people.”
Yikes.
Back when this clip first aired, O’Day tried to explain what she meant on the show with a statement that said, ”Murderers and dictators generally are some of the smartest people out there — they just use their brain power for evil purposes. I don’t condone any of their evil behavior, but I was asked about their intellectual firepower. And in my opinion you can’t have a low IQ and wreak that much havoc on the world.”

O’Day has a point in saying that unintelligent people probably wouldn’t be able to create a movement. Change usually starts with a smart person at the front of the movement. But it’s probably better to say Hitler wasn’t stupid than to say he was brilliant. The man had millions of innocent people killed for no reason. Brilliant isn’t a word we should use to talk about him.
Consider, however, that the video is from 10 years ago, when O’Day was 22 years old. If people started bringing up what any of us said and did at 22, we would all be in a constant state of horror. It’s not fair to start hating on her for it now — but it is important to remember that in the age of the internet, nothing ever goes away.

Don’t be afraid to use the extra second it takes to think about exactly what you want to say and the best way to say it.
Also, just as a general rule, don’t say nice things about Hitler. I think we can all agree on that.
