On Monday’s episode of Rizzoli & Isles, evidence was lost and found, Kent met a duck, no one slept for a long time, and Maura gave Jane a shirt that could be seen from space.(Maura: “It’s citrine!”) The team had 65 hours to retrieve said missing evidence, and while they stressed about it, I came to the conclusion that Jane leaving Boston to teach at the FBI Academy would not be the worst thing in the world.

I have previously complained about the super-obvious nature of what seems like Jane’s inevitable departure from the BPD to hang out with FBI recruits, because it does seem like a weird thing to place in front of us at this point in the season. I maintain that there should be an element of surprise as to the ending of the show, and so maybe (probably, hopefully) there’s something else in store for us other than Jane becoming an instructor. In this latest episode, I was reminded that one of the great things about Jane is how down to earth and accessible she is, in addition to being a badass. She wants to help people in a meaningful way, and so it makes perfect sense that she’d want to be a part of making law-enforcement people good at their jobs. (Also, the whole FBI thing would be a great spin-off.)

In the pantheon of crime drama, the “cop-turns-teacher” plot device usually happens when said cop/FBI agent/BAU profiler (see Alex Blake’s departure in season 10 of Criminal Minds) wants to slow down, spend more time with their family, have a more normal life, be less likely to die on a regular basis, but in Jane’s case, it would likely bring a whole new set of challenges. How does one slow down after years of being the only female officer in the Boston Police Department?
At the end of last week’s episode, Jane told Maura that it seems as though everyone in her life is moving towards something new except her, and then she made a phone call to inquire about the teaching position. I think it’s a safe bet that we’ll at least see Jane struggling with what it would mean to leave Boston, even if she doesn’t actually leave. Maybe the FBI thing isn’t really going to happen, but something of significant change is, something that will lead to Jane making a big shift in her life, or a small, yet seismic one. Either way, we’ve definitely been seeing Jane as an emotional caretaker in regard to the folks her job brings to her. (Even though this has mainly been happening in episodes that seemed like they weren’t furthering the plot along.) It’s notable that that’s happening at the same time as she’s craving a change and being offered a new opportunity.
