Remember that super-hokey, thrown-together final scene in the Castle series finale? You know, the one where Castle and Beckett get shot, fall to the ground, crawl to each other, lie side by side (Beckett probably dying), hands intertwined, and then suddenly it’s seven years later, and the happy couple are gleefully chasing their three beautiful, bouncing children around their cozy home — all in about less than two minutes’ TV time?
Yeah, well, that’s how Castle fans will have to remember the series for all of eternity, because the real intended ending that would have seen Stana Katic’s Beckett exit the show will probably never see the light of day.
Castle: The Complete Eighth Season is available for purchase on Aug. 23. However, the originally planned Season 8 finale cliffhanger scene will not be included in the extras on the DVD set, according to TVLine.

But Castle showrunner Alexi Hawley says that the scene isn’t among the extras because it just wasn’t that different than the shootout scene we already witnessed.
“The only editorial difference between the two [shootout] scenes was the cliffhanger version used some different shots at the very end to highlight the two of them on the floor together, rather than getting us into the tracking shot that took us to the time jump to the happy family,” Hawley told TVLine.
Fans had already pretty much assumed that the shootout scene was, in fact, Beckett’s death scene and that the montage was haphazardly tacked on to the end because of Castle‘s last-minute cancellation. Hawley’s words pretty much confirm those assumptions.
As horrible as the series finale was, as it turns out, fans actually aren’t all that upset about not getting the opportunity to view how the show intended to set up the plot for a Beckett-free Season 9 — mostly because Season 8 left such a bitter taste in everyone’s mouths that fans are just ready to move on from the show permanently.
“I won’t be buying S8. Castle will always end at Hollanders Woods for me,” wrote one TVLine thread commenter, while others echoed, “Too bad that DVD set is going to be the lowest-selling season of them all by a LONG shot” and “I still can’t believe this humble little show had to go out with such bad press and even worse blood. What a damn shame.”
The only person who might be upset about the scene not going public is Nathan Fillion, who was all systems go for a season without Katic as Beckett.
“Castle has been one of the greatest joys of my creative life, and I hope the show continues on for years to come,” Fillion wrote in a Twitter statement back in April, shortly after it was announced that Katic would be leaving the show.
Would you want to see the alternate ending of the Castle finale if they made it public?
