Apparently there are qualifications to be a feminist & Sarah Jessica Parker doesn’t meet them

Sarah Jessica Parker knows how to ruffle feathers. When she said she’s not a feminist, many women were confused and a little bit shocked, but there’s no reason to fear. She’s still on #TeamEquality, she just doesn’t use the word feminist because she doesn’t think she qualifies. She wants to go beyond feminism.

She told Marie Claire, “I am not a feminist. I don’t think I qualify. I believe in women and I believe in equality, but I think there is so much that needs to be done that I don’t even want to separate it anymore. I’m so tired of separation. I just want people to be treated equally.”

For a woman who carried an insanely successful show for years, you might assume that Parker doesn’t deal with the pay gap and missed opportunities because she’s a woman. But discrimination doesn’t care how successful you are, it happens to every woman. And she’s sick of it.

Parker said, “I would like all of that nonsense to end. I would like women to get paid for the value of their contributions, not by old-fashioned ideas about gender.”

She continued, “Jennifer Lawrence deserves every bit as much as her male counterpart. It’s indisputable. Emma Watson is an amazing young woman, and it’s important for her to talk about women’s issues. She isn’t concerned about herself. Women are paying the bills, getting it done, getting the kids here and there. The more we address that, we are all going to be better.”

The problem, of course, with Parker’s statement is that Marie Claire is a women’s magazine. Women already know we’re kicking ass and deserve the fair recognition and pay for what we’re contributing in every industry. We have to get this message of equality for everyone in front of men and those people who believe in the old-fashioned roles of gender and capabilities.

Maybe Parker is onto something, though — to have all the same agendas as a feminist but not the name so people never see your message coming. She really is brilliant.
