Bradley Cooper took his mother to hear President Barack Obama speak at the Democratic National Convention last week, but surprisingly got a lot of social media backlash for attending the event.

During an interview with James Corden on The Late Late Show, Cooper talked about going to the convention in his hometown of Philadelphia, and revealed that he wasn’t expecting his attendance to be so controversial.

“I took my mom and we went to hear the president speak. It was incredible,” Cooper said. “I mean, it was just unbelievable.”

When Corden brought up the fact that some people were outraged by Cooper attending the DNC, the actor revealed that he was totally shocked by conservatives’ reactions online, and wasn’t prepared for the backlash.

“I was not expecting that,” Cooper replied. “The Republicans were up in arms that I was there watching the president speak.”

“But because you played Chris Kyle in American Sniper,” fellow Late Late Show guest Todd Phillips chimed in.

“Right,” Cooper confirmed.

After Cooper was spotted attending the DNC last week, conservatives took to social media to criticize the actor for showing support for the Democratic party after portraying Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, a Republican icon, in American Sniper. They also threatened to boycott his movies.

Many jumped to Cooper’s defense, saying that people need to separate the actor from the characters he plays in his movies.
