Christmas is coming in October this year, thanks to Bridget Jones

We’re basically counting down the days until we head to the cinemas for a girls’ night on Sept. 16, to watch what we expect to be the romantic comedy of the year, Bridget Jones’s Baby. But this week we discovered there’s even more good news for fans of the book series: Her journey is not over!

Helen Fielding, the author of the Bridget Jones franchise, revealed that there is a fourth book in the works, Bridget Jones’s Baby: The Diaries, and it will hit shelves on Oct. 11.

A post on the official Bridget Jones Facebook page revealed the exciting news. The fourth instalment will be “based on the original columns published in the Independent newspaper” and will follow the “story of her somewhat bumpy journey into motherhood.” Right! But how do fans feel about the news of yet another book?

Excited, of course, but there’s also a fair amount of confusion as to where exactly this book fits in. Between The Edge of Reason and Mad About the Boy? There’s always been some confusion when comparing Fielding’s columns to the books.

What do we know about Bridget Jones’s Baby: The Diaries, and how will it differ from the latest film adaptation, which is set to come out just one month earlier?

Fielding was hesitant to reveal too much of the plot line, only saying, “At heart, Bridget Jones is about the gap between how we all feel we’re expected to be and how we actually are; and — as Bridget discovers with her somewhat bumpy pregnancy — how we expect life to turn out and how it actually does.”

Mad About the Boy left fans heartbroken (and slightly traumatised), as Fielding decided to kill off Jones’s love interest, Mark Darcy, a move that producers of Bridget Jones’s Baby chose to ignore, instead keeping Darcy alive as Jones’s ex-lover.

However, according to Daily Mail, Jonathan Cape (the publisher of the upcoming book) has confirmed that the fourth novel will not be a sequel, and instead the events will take place somewhere between the second and the third books (so your dreams of seeing Darcy again are not completely dashed). It will be “full of cheesy potatoes, outlandish advice from Drunken Singletons and Smug Mothers, chaos at scans and childbirth classes, high jinks and romance, joy and despair.”

That sounds about right and is basically everything we love so much about the series.
