Like most comedians, Amy Schumer isn’t shy when it comes to saying how she feels. With the help of social media and her hit Comedy Central series, Inside Amy Schumer, she has spoken out about everything from gun control laws to body image. However, her latest comments on one of Hollywood’s biggest events — the Met Gala — are really making us second-guess everything we know about the industry so far.
While her comments during an interview with SiriusXM radio are not surprising, Schumer sure does bring up some good points. And this could be rolling out the red carpet for a Hollywood revolution. Or at least that’s what I’m hoping for after hearing what she had to say. Because behind closed doors, the “glamour” of Hollywood is not quite what it seems.
“It’s people doing an impression of having a conversation… I don’t like the farce,” Schumer told Howard Stern about the fashion-forward night. “We’re dressed up like a bunch of fucking assholes.”
In fact, she even went so far as to say that attending the Met Gala was “like punishment.” And the shots being fired didn’t even stop there, as Schumer then went on to mention that bumping into Queen Bey herself wasn’t even enough to change her perspective. “I got to meet Beyoncé and she was like, ‘Is this your first Met Gala?’ And I was like, ‘It’s my last.'”
And, for every fashion fan reading this, let me just express one giant “ouch!” reaction.

However, as much as you may agree or disagree with what she’s saying, Schumer’s blunt comments on the Met Gala certainly do open up an entirely new conversation: What is the point of it all? While the Met Gala provides fashion designers with the chance to showcase their work on some of Hollywood’s biggest talents (that they will be dressing for red carpets and award season in the year to come), where in the female comedian job description does it say, “Must dress up in uncomfortable fancy clothing for hours at a time”? Yes, this could be seen as a perk by some. But for most celebrities, there’s really no reason why they have to show up. And dressing up and being judged on how you look certainly can’t be fun.

But of course, this isn’t the first time Schumer has spoken up on such a topic. In an interview with Vogue magazine in July 2016, the comedian explained her feelings about dressing to impress with an even stronger level of disinterest. Because while she opted against saying that fashion as a whole was “stupid,” she did say that “there’s no moral reasoning” to it. And that she thinks “that there’s a misconception in fashion that everybody wants in. I am very happy to remain out.” Meaning that in this case, being comfortable in her own skin is all that matters. And walking the red carpet for the Met Gala is most certainly out of her comfort zone.

But how is this going to affect the Hollywood red carpet culture moving forward? As for the Met Gala itself, Hollywood’s biggest stars are certainly going to continue hitting the red carpet. And of course, some actresses, comedians and musicians may genuinely have an interest in fashion’s biggest night. But in the Met Galas to come, don’t expect to see Amy Schumer representing fashion’s biggest night. And if any other celebrities seem to agree with her sentiments on the event, maybe we’ll see them slowly disappear from the red carpet as well. Because standing there and looking pretty shouldn’t be required. If anything, being true to yourself is what should be praised. And thank you, Amy Schumer, for reminding all of us about that very important Hollywood detail once again.
