Ah, roasts. They’re that special time when all bets are off and it’s totally OK to make off-color jokes that normally wouldn’t fly. It’s so magical because everyone who shows up knows what they are getting into (remember how nervous Justin Bieber looked walking into his?) and fully expects to be ripped a new one.
Jeff Ross and his usual host of celebs and comedians recently gathered to supposedly light up Rob Lowe at his Comedy Central affair, but instead it turned out to be a roast of notorious conservative social and political commentator Ann Coulter, who admitted that she hadn’t ever seen a roast and didn’t really know what they were all about. In fact, she was there just to plug her new book, In Trump We Trust, which, aside from not properly researching what roasts are like, was probably her biggest mistake.
To worsen the fact that Coulter wasn’t privy to what kind of minefield she was walking into was the unfortunate depravity of the jokes hurled her way.

Peyton Manning said she looked like a horse via The Hollywood Reporter, and even the sweet-faced Jewel took some jabs, saying, “I do want to say as a feminist that I can’t support everything that’s been said tonight. But as someone who hates Ann Coulter, I’m delighted.”
And the hits kept coming.
“Ann is one of the most repugnant, hateful, hatchet-face bitches alive,” stand-up comedian Jimmy Carr said via The Daily Beast. “It’s not too late to change, Ann. You could kill yourself!”

Dark humor certainly has its place at a roast, and Carr’s zinger is certainly not the first death joke to ever grace a roast on Comedy Central. People have drawn far worse comparisons than Manning calling Coulter a horse face. And I’m sure Coulter will recover from being bashed by Jewel.
But there was one comment that made me recoil in disgust: SNL performer Pete Davidson called her a “racist c***.”
I get it, I get it. Roasts are when comedians get to go full throttle. They get to relive the old days of comedy before the PC culture took over. I actually quite enjoy a good roast. But the C-word still has the ability to stop me in my tracks and turn my stomach.
No one should ever be called the C-word. Not even ultra-conservative political commentators.
For her part, Coulter is taking the roast in stride because, let’s face it, she’s probably used to death threats and being called the C-word.
“Everybody has such thin skin,” Coulter emailed The Daily Beast in response to the roast. “Bless their hearts, they were trying to be funny.”
