Finally, a new Lady Gaga song! On Thursday night, Lady Gaga dropped her single “Perfect Illusion,” and there’s already a lot of speculation surrounding the inspiration for the track and whether it’s about her former fiancé, Taylor Kinney.

Gaga and Kinney called off their relationship in July, and while it seemed that they ended things on amicable terms, fans think that if this track is about him, then that may not be true. The reason for all this speculation is down to the lyrics, which include, “It wasn’t love, it wasn’t love/It was a perfect illusion (perfect illusion). Mistaken for love, it wasn’t love/It was a perfect illusion (perfect illusion)/You were a perfect illusion.”
Fans have had their say on Twitter, and many seem convinced that the song — produced by Gaga with Mark Ronson, Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker and Blood Pop — is definitely about her broken relationship.

But maybe everyone is just looking for more meaning to the track than there is. Because, according to Billboard, when Gaga revealed the real inspiration for her track last month, she told iHeartRadio Music Summit, “The song is about modern ecstasy… We found our sweet, simple, ragey way of saying it… I get this sick adrenaline rush every time I hear it.” Yep, no mention of Kinney there.
We should also note that the song features in American Horror Story‘s Season 6 promo, so it could even have been created specifically for the show.

There’s a whole range of reasons why this song is not about Kinney, but it looks as though until Gaga decides to confirm (again) that it’s not, then that’s the way a lot of her fans are going to spin it.
