RuPaul Charles’ Emmy win is about so much more than a trophy

On Sunday night, RuPaul Charles achieved something phenomenal. After being snubbed for years, he finally took home his first-ever Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Host of a Reality or Reality Competition Program for his Logo series RuPaul’s Drag Race, and the reality of the win took a long time to sink in.

It’s very overwhelming,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “I’m still in shock. I’m still not sure if I’m dreaming or not, honestly.”

RuPaul faced some tough competition, with fellow nominees including American Idol‘s Ryan Seacrest, Jane Lynch for Hollywood Game Night, Steve Harvey for Little Big ShotsDancing with the Stars‘ Tom Bergeron and Heidi Klum and Project Runway‘s Tim Gunn. However, this was an award that was truly deserved and that is about much more than just a trophy: It’s about giving a voice to those who desperately need to be heard.

“I think about all the kids who watch this show all over the world, who finally have an emotional navigation system,” RuPaul told Entertainment Tonight. “This show, and the hundreds of girls who have come through our show, have told their stories so graciously and have really helped young people around the world navigate their lives, and I think I’m the most proud of that.”

Twitter is abuzz with reactions to the win, and it’s evident from the overwhelmingly positive response that everyone feels that this is one Emmy winner whose win truly means something. Among the celebs who have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to RuPaul are Frankie Grande, Tyler Oakley, Andy Cohen and CNN’s entertainment analyst, Chris Witherspoon.

Kathy Griffin also praised RuPaul for using his show as a platform to create change.

And as for RuPaul’s thoughts on social media? Well, it’s clear that he’s still a little lost for words after his latest achievement (which was not just his first Emmy win, but also his first-ever Emmy nomination).

However, RuPaul wasn’t the only person to create a wave with his exceptional win this weekend: It was also very special for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who took home a Creative Arts Emmy on Saturday for co-hosting Saturday Night Live in December of 2015. In fact, the award made history because it marked the first time that the Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series award is being shared between two actresses.

We think 2016’s Creative Arts Emmy celebration was undoubtedly one of the most memorable. But what do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
