“Flying back from NYC and cannot believe that tragedy happened. #WeWillNeverForget #WorldTradeCenter,” Evans tweeted, followed shortly by a second tweet that read, “Sorry for everyone that lost their family or friends. My uncle retired a week before. I can almost relate.”

The backlash toward Evans’ second tweet began almost immediately.
“of course you make this about you,” one follower tweeted. Another chimed in, “You are always so inappropriate You have no idea what the pain from this day feels like an you should be thankful for that.”

Evans later tried to defend herself, tweeting, “If my uncle hadn’t of retired he would have been dead right now. So no 140 characters isn’t enough to explain. Reason I said ‘almost can relate’ No, I don’t know how much hurt and pain it would cause me. Clearly stated that.”
She deleted her tweets explaining herself, but left the original tweets up, choosing instead to support her position by retweeting a fan who came to her defense.
“@PBandJenelley_1 If you hadn’t said anything, people would say you were unsympathetic. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Crazy,” the follower wrote.
