I don’t eat dogs either, but Lisa Vanderpump shouldn’t condemn those who do

I have always been, and probably will always be, a huge Lisa Vanderpump fan.

Her business acumen, her support for gay rights, her general fabulousness — what’s not to love about that woman? That said, I think her latest political move makes her a raging hypocrite.

Vanderpump is currently lobbying D.C. lawmakers to pass a resolution that would say the U.S. condemns China’s Yulin Festival, a yearly celebration held at the summer solstice during which many Chinese consume dog meat and lychee fruit, foods that are traditionally believed to help people stay cool during the hot summer months.

The festival isn’t without controversy — photos online show that the treatment of the dogs that are consumed during the festival can be cruel and inhumane. But how, I want to know, is that any different from how food animals are treated in the U.S. meat industry?

In the U.S., the cheap meat so many consumers enjoy is a result of a culture of factory farming. Cows, pigs and chickens headed for slaughter often live crammed in small, dark chutes and cages, forced to stand in piles of their own excrement and on top of the bodies of animals that died before they could be slaughtered. Sure, there are ways to eat meat that’s raised sustainably and without cruelty, but inhumane practices continue.

While the Yulin Festival has only been around since 2009, the Chinese have been eating dog meat for centuries. Vanderpump’s choice to condemn a practice that has been a cultural tradition in China for more than 400 years is nothing short of intolerant, especially when considering that she eats meat and owns several restaurants that serve meat. In some cultures, it’s considered repulsive to eat cows or pigs, yet Vanderpump does it without shame. She has no right to judge Asian cultures that eat dog meat just because she wouldn’t do it herself.
