What could possibly be controversial about a Marc Jacobs fashion show? Right?
Wrong.
Jacobs is facing some seriously pissed off folks after dressing his runway models — most of them white — in fake dreadlocks. The loc extensions — worn by Karlie Kloss, Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Irina Shayk, Adriana Lima and other models during the show — were designed by an Etsy seller. They were dyed tons of bright colors, and according to Jacobs’ hairstylist, Guido Palau, the look was inspired by “the ’80s, raver culture, Boy George and Harajuku.”

The problem, of course, is the prevalence of dreadlocks in black culture. They’ve been historically used to keep black hair moisturized and healthy, and the hijacking of the look for white fashion is definitely cultural appropriation. A lot of people on Twitter were quick to point that out.

Judging by their reaction so far, though, Jacobs and his staff DGAF. When Palau was asked about the “politics of giving everyone in the show dreadlocks,” this was his response: “I don’t really think about that. I take inspiration from every culture. Style comes from clashing things. It’s always been there — if you’re creative, if you make food, music and fashion, whatever, you’re inspired by everything. It’s not homogeneous. Different cultures mix all the time. You see it on the street. People don’t dress head-to-toe in just one way.”
And Jacobs responded to cultural appropriation claims on Instagram, saying, “All who cry ‘cultural appropriation’ or whatever nonsense about any race or skin color wearing their hair in any particular style or manner- funny how you don’t criticize women of color for straightening their hair. I respect and am admired by people and how they look. I don’t see color or race- I see people. I’m sorry to read that so many people are so narrow minded.”
