There really is no winning when you’re a female judge on The Voice. Well, yes, Christina Aguilera just won the competition last season, but she remained one of the show’s least liked judges — and the subject of constant, unrelated criticism. From her outfits to her makeup, people just loved to dig in their claws on Twitter.

Gwen Stefani and Shakira have suffered the same, and if the Twitter response to tonight’s episode is any indication, viewers also will go to any length to tear down new judges Alicia Keys and Miley Cyrus.
What did Keys and Cyrus do that was so awful? In my opinion, both were brilliant, but some viewers seem to think that their good advice was overshadowed by their appearance. First, viewers went out of their way to criticize Cyrus’ colorful outfit:
Viewers also did not seem to appreciate what she had done with her face (or rather, what she hadn’t done) prior to tonight’s episode. Keys made the very brave decision to go sans makeup, and while several viewers applauded her for this choice, others claimed that she just didn’t look her best.
People have no qualms about attacking Gwen Stefani when she goes out of her way to change her team members’ appearance (who could forget Braiden Sunshine or Korin Bukowski’s transformations?), but they’re perfectly OK with trashing the show’s new judges when they express their personality via clothing and makeup (or no makeup) choices.
I don’t get why viewers are so concerned about Keys’ and Cyrus’ appearance. Yes, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton occasionally are criticized for their appearance, but the occasional quips they receive certainly don’t measure up to the trash-talking targeting the show’s amazing female coaches. People have been especially negative about Cyrus, but I think it’s better to withhold judgment until she proves herself.

I appreciate Cyrus’ eye-catching outfits and Keys’ decision to forgo makeup, but ultimately, that’s not why I watch The Voice. I want to see America’s up-and-coming vocal stars and how they transform with the help of some of the industry’s finest musicians. I think the haters need to back off and let Cyrus and Keys work their magic.
