Making a Murderer subject Steven Avery is confident that his lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, will soon prove that he is innocent of the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach — and when Zellner exonerates Avery and he walks free, he already has some pretty big life plans in store.
Zellner has confirmed that Avery is engaged to Lynn Hartman, a legal secretary who hails from Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Steven deserves every bit of happiness that comes his way,” Zellner told People magazine. “He is very much in love and happy with Lynn, so we are happy for them.”

According to the Daily Mail, Hartman and Avery corresponded through daily phone calls over the past eight months and finally met in person in September — when Avery popped the question.
“She’s going to be my future wife, we’ll be laughing forever,” Avery told the Daily Mail.
The couple is scheduled to sit down with Dr. Phil for a special airing Oct. 3 and 4 to talk about their love, which they say began with letters that Hartman wrote to Avery in prison. When Dr. Phil asks if it was “love at first write,” the couple reveals that they didn’t tell each other “I love you” until the first time they spoke on the phone.
Avery also says he plans to get married ASAP — he hopes his conviction will be overturned like his nephew’s was, and that he’ll be released from prison soon.
“The truth is coming out and sooner or later, all the truth will come out,” he says. “I want to wait until I’m out [to get married] and I don’t think that’ll be too long; right around the corner.”
Zellner is happy for Avery, and Avery seems pretty excited to marry Hartman, but that hasn’t stopped outsiders from speculating about Hartman’s motives for wanting to marry Avery. There were some drama and nasty comments posted on the Avery-backed Facebook page Steven Avery Project, and Curtis Busse, who runs the page, recently posted a message in support of Hartman.

“Via Steven’s request. There have been some misunderstandings about lynn and her intentions, he wants to remind you all that her intentions are true and her and Steven are very much in love and this isn’t going to change anytime soon,” Busse wrote. “Steven asks that you respect his future wife and respect their relationship, rumors that are made about there relationship are false and if it isn’t coming from steven directly it’s not true.”
This isn’t the first time Avery has gotten engaged during his second incarceration. He was previously betrothed to Sandy Greenman, but she called off the wedding plans in January. Greenman maintains that she still believes Avery is innocent of killing Halbach.
As you might remember from the documentary, Avery was engaged to Jodi Stachowski during filming, but she has since renounced their relationship and claimed he is guilty of Halbach’s murder. Avery was also previously married to Lori Mathiesen, but they divorced in 1988. He has four children from that marriage.
