I’ll be the first to admit I’m not exactly what you’d consider a Kardashian fan. I don’t watch the shows (OK, maybe I’ve caught an episode here and there at the gym), I don’t follow any of the family on social media, and I think the life they lead is a bit… excessive.
But what happened to Kim Kardashian West over the weekend was no joke, and I really feel for her right now. The internet has not been particularly kind to Kardashian West (surprise, surprise) since she was hogtied, gagged and robbed of millions of dollars, and neither have tasteless late-night comedians.
I understand why it can be easy to poke fun at Kardashian West. Why should we feel sorry for her? It seems like she gets everything handed to her on a silver platter and then she rubs it the faces of all us non-famous plebeians. But now just simply isn’t the time to make tone-deaf jokes.

While it seems that Kardashian West is a larger than life personality who doesn’t feel feelings or bleed real human blood, what happened to her was horrible and will probably change the way she views the world forever. It’s no laughing matter, and details about the ordeal keep emerging making one thing very clear: The thieves didn’t just rob Kardashian West of millions of dollars worth of jewelry, they robbed her of her feeling of safety.
According to a People magazine source, Kardashian West is blaming herself for what she went through.
“Kim’s in shock and blaming herself. She’s tearing herself up that she Snapchatted the ring so much and wore it all the time. This incident is making her question everything. How she dresses, what she does,” the source said.
It’s true, critics have come forward to say that Kardashian West wasn’t being smart about how she flaunted her wealth for the world to see, and now it seems that she, herself, is starting to truly understand the repercussions of being such a public persona.
So what does that mean for the future of Kardashian West’s TV shows, her apps and her millions of loyal Twitter and Instagram followers? Will she be so terrified of living a public life from now on that she will fade into obscurity?
It sure looks like it. For now, Kardashian West has called off all public appearances indefinitely.
“Kim is still upset and things are not even close to being back to normal. She has no plans to work in the near future,” another source told People. “She just wants to stay home with her kids. She realizes that she has lived in a bubble. She could have never imagined being robbed like this. She is now more worried than ever about protecting the kids. She doesn’t want to let them out of sight.”
And on Thursday, E! told Us Weekly that filming for Keeping Up With the Kardashianshas also been halted.
“Kim’s well-being is our core focus right now,” a statement to Us read. “No decision has been made as to when production will resume.”
On top of halting work and public appearances, she (and most of her family) has completely vanished from social media and the internet. If you have even dipped your toe into the world of pop culture over the past five years, you know this is unheard of.
I can’t help but think that Kardashian West’s incident in Paris might be the end of Kardashian world domination as we know it.
