Turns out, Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell’s relationship isn’t as picture perfect as it seemed on The Bachelor After the Final Rose.

I mean, surprise, right? Not really. No one is perfect, let’s just start with that totally true cliché. So fine, they’ve got some issues. What I didn’t expect was the scope of their issues would be centered around Higgins’ time on the show — specifically, JoJo Fletcher, who was Higgins’ runner-up.
Higgins made a big Bachelor no-no when he told both Fletcher and Bushnell that he loved them before he picked Bushnell to be his forever. That decision has been haunting the couple, which is unfortunate because it’s clear Higgins is crazy about Bushnell.
Higgins said it best during the episode: He couldn’t imagine his life without Bushnell, he could imagine his life without Fletcher. He chose Bushnell. He wants to spend forever with Bushnell, and he’s proved it by building a foundation of a life with Bushnell.

In my mind, it’s time for the two of them to move on, especially because Ben & Lauren picks up nearly a year after Higgins proposed to Bushnell. Fletcher was already engaged to Jordan Rodgers at this point and has clearly moved on herself. She’s not hung up on Higgins.
It could be that Bushnell’s insecurity was just a ploy to get some drama going at the start of Ben & Lauren, but their fight at Fletcher’s After the Final Rose special seems to suggest otherwise. She’s genuinely not comfortable having any sort of contact with Fletcher and I get it, but if she and Higgins are going to be successful then she needs to trust him and let go of the past.
It seems that she hasn’t done it yet, even though the premiere was filmed months ago. Bushnell recently said during an interview with People, “There are so many weird elements to being in a relationship after The Bachelor. We’ve gotten in arguments like any other couple, but about some things that other couples wouldn’t have to fight about, like the fact that we met when he was dating other women. You can say that’s what I signed up for, but it’s still real life and it’s still hard.”
I’m looking forward to seeing where Higgins and Bushnell progress on Ben & Lauren. I have a good feeling that they’ll make it past this hurdle in their relationship. (I mean, they are still engaged, after all.)
