There have been a lot of shocking celebrity breakups and divorces this year, and this one is definitely up there with the most unexpected: Robert Matthew Van Winkle (better known by his stage name Vanilla Ice) and his wife, Laura Van Winkle, are getting divorced after almost 20 years of marriage.

The couple was married in 1997 and they share two daughters, Dusti Rain and KeeLee Breeze, but according to Entertainment Tonight, Laura decided to call time on their marriage and filed the official paperwork on Tuesday, Oct. 18, in Palm Beach, Florida.
There is no confirmation as to the reason for the divorce, but according to TMZ, it’s been in the cards for quite some time. Sources close to Vanilla Ice reportedly revealed that he and Laura had “actually been separated for a few years now, and she’s just making the split official.” This report makes sense, as a glance at the rapper’s social media pages show that he has been rather chipper of late, which seems to suggest that he had prepared himself for the divorce (either that, or he’s good at hiding his despair or the fact that he was caught completely off guard).

In fact, just two days ago, the former Dancing with the Stars contestant (he was eliminated in week four of Season 23) took to Instagram to wish his dancing partner, Witney Carson, a very happy birthday. Posting a sweet selfie, Vanilla Ice captioned the post with, “Happy birthday to my partner @WitneyCarson The best dancing @Ninja ever. @DancingABC #dwts.”

Vanilla Ice and Laura appeared to have a somewhat volatile relationship, as he was arrested for domestic battery in both 2001 and 2008. He admitted to pulling his wife’s hair to prevent her from jumping out of his truck during the first incident, and in the second case, which was later dropped, Vanilla Ice was arrested for allegedly kicking and hitting his wife, Daily Mail reports. However, she later claimed he only pushed her, while a neighbor stated that it was a verbal argument.
