Prince Harry has plenty to say about his relationship with Meghan Markle

After a week of intense speculation, the royal romance rumours have been confirmed: Prince Harry is dating American actress Meghan Markle.

Kensington Palace released a statement on Tuesday morning confirming Markle’s royal girlfriend status — but there was a lot more to it than that. The statement begins by saying that Prince Harry has always loved his supporters, but at times he finds the media too much, and at the present time, “a line has been crossed.”

“His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment,” read the statement. “Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm.”

The statement ends with: “He knows that it is unusual to issue a statement like this, but hopes that fair-minded people will understand why he has felt it necessary to speak publicly.”

According to a U.S. gossip website, Markle is “overwhelmed” by the media frenzy, is barely sleeping and “feels guilty even though it’s not her fault.”

Being in a relationship with a member of the royal family is never going to be easy — just ask Chelsy Davy. If Prince Harry and Meghan Markle want it to work, they’ll have to deal with a crazy amount of attention. Confirming the relationship after only a few months is a clear indication that this couple are in it for the long haul, so let’s hope they get some peace to get to know each other without being harassed. And good on Prince Harry for taking this “unusual” step. He’s never been one to play by the rules… which may be precisely why Markle has fallen for him.
