Alicia Keys is not a fan of Disney‘s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In fact, she goes so far as to forbidding her two sons (Egypt, age 6, and Genesis, age 10 months) to watch it — and she has good reason to.

“I feel like it’s by design that I’m raising boys, like there’s a reason. I really feel that,” she said during an interview with The Edit. Adding, “They say that every child learns from their mother — it’s ingrained from babyhood. Have you watched Snow White lately? I get real funky about the classics; I don’t like [my sons] watching it. It’s totally sexist, misogynistic — she’s cleaning for seven dwarfs.”
Keys was quick to state that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with choosing to stay home and cook, clean and care for others, but that the way the film addresses this activity is damaging.

“There’s nothing wrong with a woman who chooses to stay at home with her family, it’s a hard-ass job,” she explains, “but it’s the way it’s spoken about.”
This is not the first time a Disney film has come under fire for being sexist. A study conducted by linguists Carmen Fought and Karen Eisenhauer found an imbalance in the roles of female and male characters (with male characters speaking far more than their female counterparts, even in plots driven by female characters) between 1989 and 1999. Over the years, there have been many discussions about the dark side of these classics with their undertones of racism and sexism, so it’s unsurprising that Keys would want to prevent her children from watching said films.
But how do you feel about her decision to ban her kids from watching classics such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs?
