Whether you are a Hillary Clinton supporter or not, you have to admit that Kate McKinnon’s Saturday Night Live cold open this week was hauntingly beautiful. McKinnon’s talents continue to amaze us, and her rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” was seriously goosebump-inducing. We knew McKinnon was a woman of many talents, but dang — brava.
Her song — which she sang in character as Clinton — perfectly summed up the angst of millions of Americans who were crushed after the results of the 2016 presidential election. The fact that McKinnon’s performance also served as an apt tribute to Cohen, who died earlier in the week, added an extra layer of emotion that caused many to break down in tears.

At the end of the song, McKinnon turned to the camera to deliver the line, “I’m not giving up, and neither should you.”
The hope through the anguish was palpable, and SNL viewers took to social media to express their gratitude for McKinnon’s performance.
Powerful positive responses from non-Clinton supporters are giving us hope that we can still bond together as a country but, of course, not everyone agreed that SNL should have taken such a serious approach to the election results. Some fans were disappointed that McKinnon’s usual humor didn’t poke through at any point, and other viewers seized the opportunity to spew more hate over the election.

On another note, thank god Dave Chappelle is back in our lives.
Chappelle hosted the episode and even resurrected all our favorite characters from Chappelle’s Show in a hilariously re-imagined version of The Walking Dead‘s shocking Season 7 premiere.
Our only misgivings about that sketch are that Chappelle’s Rick James or R. Kelly didn’t pop in for a second.
Chappelle’s opening monologue was nothing short of perfect as well. Though his opener was peppered with his usual social commentary that keeps fans in stitches, Chappelle chose to end his speech on a serious note.
More: Donald Trump’s first presidential action would probably be canceling SNL
“I’m wishing Donald Trump luck and I’m going to give him a chance,” he said. “And we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one too.”
If McKinnon and Chapelle aren’t giving up, then neither should any of us.
