Criminal Minds writer Virgil Williams is sharing his side of the story in the Thomas Gibson drama that led to the actor being fired from the show after script disagreements led to a physical altercation between the two.

“He came to me with a line change that he wanted,” Williams told People. “Because of this particular episode, the change that he wanted hurt the story. I offered him a fix. He didn’t accept the fix. He said, ‘Fix it so I’m happy’ and then walked off.”
After the heated exchange, Williams said he was searching for showrunner Erica Messer to explain the situation when Gibson walked by and kicked Williams in the shin.
Gibson explains what happened differently, saying that Williams “came into that room and started coming towards me. As he brushed past me, my foot came up and tapped him on the leg. If I hadn’t moved, he would have run into me. We had some choice words, for which I apologized the next day, and that was it. It was over. We shot the scene, I went home — and I never got to go back.”

Gibson was initially suspended from the show for two weeks because of the altercation, but was later told he was dismissed from the series permanently. According to Daily Mail, Gibson had three strikes against him, including the physical altercation.
Williams, who has previously been suspended from the Criminal Minds set for raising his voice, did admit that despite the “hostile work environment,” Gibson created, he will miss his character.
He said, “[The fans] got to watch him, but I got to write him.”
