As most Americans sat down to their Thanksgiving dinners, peaceful protests on the Stand Rock Indian Reservation near the site of construction on the Dakota Access oil pipeline continued.

And as police continued to attack unarmed water protectors with rubber bullets and water cannons, a handful of celebs stepped up to show their support for the #NoDAPL cause.
Katy Perry posted to both Instagram and Twitter, asking her followers to donate to help stop the pipeline’s construction.

“On #Thanksgiving, a day with complex origins, I want to speak up in support of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation and their protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline,” she wrote. “Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with what is going on in North Dakota. While it may not be on your front pages, this is not a frightening series of events for “them”, it is frightening series of events for all of us. The pipeline in question, would carry crude oil through land sacred to indigenous peoples and put a crucial water supply at risk. We have seen the results of unintended oil spills before and they are crippling to the health of the surrounding people and environment.”
She continued, “To all those peacefully protesting to protect history, to protect that which is personally sacred and to protect our life sustaining water sources, we are here shoulder to shoulder with you across this country. We cannot afford to be complacent with our rights and we cannot afford to be complacent with the rights of our neighbor.”

Meanwhile, actresses Shailene Woodley and Jane Fondavisited Standing Rock to serve 500 Thanksgiving meals to the water protectors who are living there.

Woodley has spent a lot of time at Standing Rock, and was arrested near a pipeline construction site last month. In a recent panel discussion with other water protectors, she urged more people to become involved in the fight to stop the pipeline.

“I ask that everyone who’s paid attention to this movement really takes a step back, and outside of the celebrity involvement, outside of all the hype surrounding Standing Rock, this is a movement that was led by youth and led by women and is just about protecting clean water and healing,” she said.
