Rosie O’Donnell says her suggestion that Barron Trump is autistic was not meant to cause harm.
“I tweeted from my heart,” she wrote

It all started last week, when Rosie O’Donnell posited a question about Barron Trump on her Twitter account. “Barron Trump Autistic? if so – what an amazing opportunity to bring attention to the AUTISM epidemic,” she wrote, posting a YouTube video created earlier this month that combined footage with speculation about 10-year-old Barron’s anti-social behavior. And though O’Donnell quickly faced criticism for posting the video, she followed up on her website with a strange little poem of sorts, saying that she only posted it because her own daughter was diagnosed with high-functioning autism earlier this year.
“My 3.5 yr old daughter dakota / was diagnosed in september / with HFA – high functioning autism,” she wrote. “I have been immersed in that world/reality since / learning – reading – asking questions / it’s all autism – all the time / for the newly diagnosed.” She went on to explain that her post was meant to be inclusive, as she and her family have been looking for “the knowledge we r not alone / there r others living this too.”

Thing is, O’Donnell and Barron Trump’s father — Donald Trump, you may have heard of him — have a famous and longstanding feud that goes all the way back to 2006, so anything O’Donnell could possibly tweet about the Trumps is sure to be misconstrued. Among many other barbs, she’s called him an “orange anus,” and he actually stooped so low as to acknowledge — during a debate — that though he has “said very tough things to her,” he believes it was appropriate. “I think everybody would agree that she deserves it, and nobody feels sorry for her,” he said in September.

It’s hard to say what O’Donnell’s real intention was in this situation, but one thing is for sure. We could all stand to be more supportive of those who have been diagnosed with autism, and the parents and families of those individuals. Head over to the Autism Society or Autism Speaks to make a tax-deductible donation to benefit autism research, education and outreach — and let the celebs battle it out amongst themselves.
