Buckle up, everyone, because Nick Cannon has some opinions about Planned Parenthood.

The America’s Got Talent host has been under fire for comments he’s made recently about Planned Parenthood, including saying that the organization promotes “population control” and performs “modern day eugenics.”
“Hillary [Clinton] was sneaking and cheating,” Cannon said in a radio interview, in which he also accused Planned Parenthood of committing “real genocide” on black Americans. “Think about all the stuff they did with Planned Parenthood and all that type of stuff. That type of stuff is to take our community — and forget gentrification, it’s real genocide, and it’s been like that for years.”
OK, let’s set aside the fact that Cannon’s statement makes no sense grammatically and that he doesn’t make a single specific point (what exactly is this “all that stuff” he keeps referring to?).

In light of the results of the presidential election, Planned Parenthood is already likely to face a tough four years, so let’s bring some facts into this. Abortion services amount to around 3 percent of what Planned Parenthood offers to its clients yearly. 3. Percent.
The vast majority of what Planned Parenthood offers is completely unrelated to abortion; in fact, more than three-quarters of the services Planned Parenthood provides annually are related to STI treatment and screening and birth control. Another 20 percent of Planned Parenthood’s clients are there for cancer screening and prevention, pap smears and other women’s health services, not abortion.
Planned Parenthood sees more than 4.6 million people each year, 79 percent of whom have income at or near poverty levels. Estimates say more than 200,000 unplanned pregnancies are avoided yearly because of the contraceptive services Planned Parenthood provides. Regardless of your stance on abortion, trashing the organization for “eugenics” or “genocide” is just plain wrong.
Despite all the good it does, Planned Parenthood is under near constant attack, and not just by celebrities. Vice President-elect Mike Pence has been leading the charge for years to strip all federal funding from the organization (federal funding, by the way, is prohibited by law to be used for abortion services, so it only pays for all those other things Planned Parenthood provides). To help fight against misinformation and support Planned Parenthood’s work, you can donate to the organization here.
