Selena Gomez reveals the one major thing she gave up at rehab

We’re all constantly attached to our phones. But Selena Gomez had to disconnect from hers for 90 days while in rehab, and she hasn’t looked back, as she said in a new interview with Thrive Global— her first since reappearing on the scene. “I recently took 90 days off. During that time I did not have my cellphone,” Gomez said. “It was the most refreshing, calming, rejuvenating feeling. Now I rarely pick up my phone, and only limited people have access to me.”

Gomez added that she doesn’t use email, rather preferring to stay offline and go analog: “I do better over the phone!” she said. Honestly, we’re impressed. What 24-year-old Millennial prefers a phone call to a quick email these days?

The young pop star continually guided questions back to the subject of her break, seeming to prefer to face it head-on instead of answering pretty standard questions with vapid stock responses. She could have responded to a question about the last time she felt burned out by saying something canned or even turned her answer toward the recent election — who didn’t feel burned out after that? — but rather said straight-up she last felt burned out “three months ago, before I took a hiatus to take care of myself.” The woman has guts, and we applaud her for it.

Gomez hit her first public event since canceling the remainder of her Revival Tour when she made a surprise appearance at the American Music Awards a couple of weeks ago. “I had to stop,” she said onstage while accepting an award for Favorite Female Artist in the pop/rock category. “’Cause I had everything, and I was absolutely broken inside.” She encouraged fans who are struggling to seek help, adding, “If you are broken, then you do not have to stay broken.”

In her interview with Thrive, Gomez said that these days, if she finds 15 minutes free, she likes to practice “self-affirmations in cooking or napping.” The first thing she does when she gets out of bed is “drink water, stretch, and take a deep breath.” And she’s been finding energy by “staying healthy (mentally, physically, emotionally) and learning new things.”

To round things out, Gomez shared a quote that gives her strength when times are tough: “You are not what happened to you, you are what you chose to become after what happened to you.” Truth — and must ring especially true as she figures out what’s next.
