I’m just going to come right out and say it. Nicki Minaj‘s behavior toward a woman she encountered on the street in Miami is disgusting. I’m embarrassed and ashamed for Minaj after watching it.

In the video, Minaj yells out her car window at the woman, who appears to be suffering from some kind of mental illness. As she harasses the woman from her car, Minaj can be heard cackling to herself at the woman’s behavior. It’s almost too awful to watch.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness addressed the video and Minaj’s vile behavior, saying in a statement, “Nobody would make fun of a cancer patient, and mental illness is an illness like any other.”

Minaj’s followers have also been taking her to task in comments posted to her video on Instagram.
“Homeless and mentally ill people are sick of being exploited on social media for laughs,” one user wrote. “This isn’t funny. Nicki is lame as hell for this,” another added.
According to NAMI, around 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. suffers from mental illness in a given year. In the homeless population, the stats are bleak — close to half of the homeless population in the U.S. suffers from serious mental illness or substance abuse disorders. More than 90 percent of people who commit suicide suffer from mental illness, and suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. Yet due to factors from lack of access to care to social stigmas, only about 40 percent of those who suffer from mental illness actually receive treatment. It’s a serious problem, and actions like Minaj’s only make it worse.
