Nicole Kidman looks stunning on the cover of VogueAustralia‘s January 2017 issue (which hits newsstands Monday, Dec. 19), but it’s the accompanying interview that has really grabbed our attention.

Kidman is a loving mother of four: two adopted children, Connor and Isabella, whom she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise; and Sunday and Faith, fathered by husband Keith Urban. During the interview, she got very honest about her thoughts on motherhood — these are our standout moments from the interview.
1. She always knew she would adopt
“I always knew I’d adopt, I just always wanted a child,” said Kidman. “I think from a very early age, I wanted a child. I knew that I was going to have a child and that it didn’t matter [how], I actually didn’t know if I was ever going to give birth to a child. So that was the least of it for me. And what I did first was adopt.”
The interview also looked at Kidman’s role in the new film, Lion — a true story about the adoption of an Indian boy, Saroo (played by Dev Patel) in Australia, and his journey back to his hometown years later.
2. She hates the things people say about adopted children
Kidman feels strongly that biological children are in no way more your child than an adopted child, and she revealed the thing she hates that people say to women who have adopted: “We feel so bad that you couldn’t have your own children.”

3. Motherhood is incredibly important to her
Speaking of the bond that a mother shares with her child, Kidman said: “Once the bond is there between a mother and a child, the biological part of it is sort of the least important part. I think when that bond forms, it’s astounding how powerful it is.”
4. Which is why she felt drawn to the Lion storyline
Kidman revealed that she felt a pull towards the story, and also Sue Brierley, who she portrays in the film (and who joined her for the interview). Her comments suggest that she was deeply moved by the storyline, which gave her the opportunity to highlight adoption in Australia. “That’s what I love about this movie, and what I keep trying to say,” she confessed.
Kidman recently discussed the importance of motherhood during an interview with eTalk, Huffington Post reports. She said, “I have adopted children and so this is sort of a love letter to them and at the same time for all… you have the need to have mothers, whether they’re biological — in any form, good love, nurturing, nourishing love is so good for any human being.”

Films like Lion and celebrities like Kidman, who not only champion adoption but also educate people on the topic, are doing great work in challenging the mindset that having biological children is the only way to truly become a parent.
