There were plenty of major fashion statements being made on the 2017 Oscars red carpet, but one accessory made a political statement, too. Celebrities at the 2017 Oscars wearing blue ACLU ribbons made their political voices heard without saying a word.

The ribbons, according to a statement made to The Hollywood Reporter, are part of the initiative “Stand With the ACLU” and are meant to act “as a symbol of solidarity with the nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, which has worked for nearly 100 years to defend and protect individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and law of the U.S.”
The first major arrivals to the red carpet were Ruth Negga (nominated for Best Actress for her role in Loving) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (nominated for Best Original Song for “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana). Negga, Miranda and Miranda’s mother, who was also his date for the evening, were sporting the ACLU ribbons. While they all looked stunning in their respective outfits, it was the ribbons that got tongues wagging on social media.
Seriously, I know it’s difficult to look away from the beauty of Negga (it’s a bit like looking directly into the sun, right?), but if you squint, you can see her blue ribbon standing out.

Miranda and his mother look like absolute treasures, but those blue ribbons they’re wearing make their outfits some of the best of the evening.
Karlie Kloss also showed up on the Oscars red carpet in a stunning white gown and white cape, but it was the blue ACLU ribbon pinned on the lower half of her dress that was eye-catching.
